Open Data Can be the Basis for an Virtual Denmark In Minecraft

Since the US government opened its troves of public data we've seen some pretty neat projects like climate-change prediction tools and deforestation-monitoring systems. Denmark is, on the contrary hand, has taken an entirely different approach: the Danish Geodata Agency used internally developed topographic maps and elevation models to create an exact replica of the most happiest nation within Minecraft's squishy limits. Unlike the virtual Great Britain we've seen before this pixelated Denmark is more than natural features like forests and hills. As Ars Technica has spotted, it includes accurate replicas of homes, highways and landmarks, as well as businesses. The project was designed to showcase the open-data initiative of the country to its students and educators. Anyone can visit the site until the Danish government's game servers shut down in October. Server rules, however, have been changed to block enemies and TNT -there are no Creeps allowed, naturally.
